In my blog last week, I started taking a high level look at what is included under the hood in newly introduced Apple ResearchKit. I also touched upon functional details on one of the three out of box modules provided in the ResearchKit software framework – Surveys. Today we will look in depth at the second module – Informed Consent. As I did last week,I will touch upon the functional feature set of this module rather than many technical details. Of course you can get into more implementation level details here.

Apple ResearchKit - Will It Change Medical Research As We Know It?(Part-2)

In my blog last week, I touched upon how Apple is once again attempting to fundamentally impact and disrupt an industry that is very change averse with a lot of entrenched interests and challenges. Apple’s ResearchKit (an open source software platform)in many ways promises to democratize medical research by making it easier for the masses to participate in it while at the same time making it efficient (and cost effective) for the researchers.

In today’s blog I am going to touch upon at a high level what’s included under the hood in ResearchKit as well as more functional details on one of the built-in modules - Surveys. You can get into more implementation level details here.

At its core,ResearchKit provides three modules that can be customized and built upon by the developers. These modules provide base functionality for items commonly needed in medical research such as surveys, participant consent and simple active tasks that users perform such as walking, sitting and talking.

Organizations have been quick to adopt the Mobility trail. They are aware that by encouraging workers and executives to go mobile, the gains are immense in terms of employee productivity, customer satisfaction, cost control and revenue growth. Multiple surveys have highlighted such benefits. A recent report of Boston Consulting Group spoke about two times the growth in revenue among the top 25% of Medium enterprises when they adopt Mobility.

However, there is an important assumption being made here. And that assumption has led many an enterprise to experience less than expected returns on their Mobility investments. The assumption being that users – employees, associates, partners and customers will identify, install and go on using the enterprise mobile apps just as fish would take to water!!! User adoption determines in a big way how enterprises will realize the benefits of embracing Mobility. A recent survey showed that nearly 65% of the enterprise apps get deleted or under-utilized for multiple reasons.
